Welcome Home!

Dear Parents of Returning Gap Year Kids,

What a wonderful moment. Your kiddo is home—full of stories, a little older, a little wiser, and probably more exhausted than you’ve ever seen them. Truly, they’re going to need sleep. Lots of it. Let them hibernate for a few days. Keep the social plans light and let them settle into the safety of their own bed.

They’ve learned so much out in the world—maybe even a few things you tried to tell them before they left. When they share these new pearls of wisdom, just smile, nod, and enjoy it. This is their story to tell. Give them space to shine.

Remember the siblings, too. Younger ones may feel overshadowed, and older ones may feel left out. Make room for everyone’s feelings.

But mostly? Love them up with their favorite foods, cozy time together, and a whole lot of “we’re so proud of you!” They’ve done something big and brave, and their world is opening in beautiful ways.

And for the returning students:

Sleep. You need it.

Do your own laundry—you’re officially a grown-up.

Share your stories, but maybe not every detail.

Pitch in at home—it matters.

And don’t be discouraged if someone isn’t interested in your adventures. Not everyone gets it. When that happens, text me—I never tire of hearing about the amazing things you’ve done!

Enjoy and embrace this time! It is beautiful and unique.
