Transitions from Gap Year to College
Coming home from your gap year and getting ready to head off to college is such a unique moment. You’re stepping into this next chapter carrying experiences that almost none of your classmates have had. That can feel exciting one minute and intimidating the next. If you find yourself wondering whether you’ll fit in, I want you to pause for a second and think back to the hardest day of your gap year. Remember how you got through it. Remember how resourceful, resilient, and capable you were. College may feel new, but you already know how to navigate the unfamiliar.
One thing to keep in mind is that some colleges make an effort to pair gap year students with roommates who are a little older or have taken a similar path, while others don’t. Either way, you’ll be just fine. Your year away has probably made you more confident, more adaptable, and much more comfortable figuring things out as you go. Those are wonderful qualities to have, and they’ll serve you well in classrooms, residence halls, friendships, and every opportunity that comes your way. You’ve also learned how to speak up for yourself—and often for others—in ways you may never have imagined before. Don’t be afraid to lean on those skills.
Take time every now and then to reflect on who you were before your gap year, who you became while you were out exploring the world, and who you are today. Why did you choose this adventure? What moments challenged you? Which ones changed your perspective? Those memories are part of your story now. Keep them close, especially on the days when you feel uncertain.
You’ll discover that some people are fascinated by your gap year and will want to hear every detail. Others may not really understand it, and that’s okay. Everyone is on their own journey, and not everyone sees the world the same way. Don’t let that discourage you or make you shrink your experiences.
Instead, walk into college with the same curiosity, courage, and open heart that carried you through your gap year. Be willing to meet new people, try new things, and keep learning. And if you ever feel like no one quite understands how meaningful your gap year was, you know where to find me. I’ll happily listen to every story, every lesson, and every adventure all over again. I couldn't be more excited for you. You're ready for this, and I have a feeling this is going to be a wonderful year.
