Didn’t get Your First Choice? Here’s What to do

You know that Rolling Stones song, “You Can’t Always Get What You Want?” Well, it applies to a lot of things, including gap years. Sometimes a program fills up before you can put a deposit down. When this happens, it’s a huge bummer, but every program has waitlists—get on them! Plans change and you never know when a spot will open up. Keep in touch with the program admissions folks so they know that you’re interested, and keep an eye on your email inbox!

Sometimes programs are canceled because there weren’t enough signups, and the group is not large enough to run the program. This is very disappointing for students and program providers, but it happens. That is why it’s so important to have backup options in mind. During the enrollment process, most gap year programs will ask you to list a second (and sometimes third) choice. If your alternative options no longer appeal to you, the program should refund your deposit. This is when working with a gap year consultant can really come in handy. A gap year consultant can help you quickly pivot and find another option that will work for you.

Sometimes you may have a change of heart. You may find out about a different opportunity that is more appealing or your plans change, and the dates of the program no longer work. This situation can be a little bit more tricky in terms of getting a refund. During the enrollment process, make sure you are completely clear on the program’s cancelation policy. You are obligated to pay whatever fees you agreed to when you signed the contract. Keep an open line of communication with the program. If it is past the refund date, and the program is able to fill the spot, they may be willing to give you a refund, or allow you to use your funds for a different program at a different date.

As with everything, an open line of communication with the program here is key. If at any point before or during the enrollment process you’re feeling unsure or you have questions, reach out to the program. They are there to answer your questions and help guide you in any way they can. It is in everyone’s best interest for you to want to be fully invested.

And always remember: Harrison Ford was George Lucas’ second choice for Han Solo.
